I’ve been looking forward to this for months. Boom Boom Mex Mex, a staple of my diet when I’m home in my native Marcellus, opened its doors this month once again after owners Tom and Lupe returned from their five-month off-season, spent in Mexico.
It’s a big event for most Marcellus and Camillus natives. They flock to the Mexican taqueria for tacos, burritos, and my personal favorite—super-loaded nachos with pineapple and jalapeños.
What makes this place so special is how quaint it is. Colorful tablecloths cover plastic fold-out tables, kitschy trinkets adorn the walls, and Lupe works the cash register alongside her employees. It’s mildly tacky, but it’s a gathering place for the whole community. Eating at Boom Boom’s multiple times a week in the summer is not frowned upon.
The traditionally seasoned meats, rice and beans to fresh vegetables and homemade salsas are all delicious (and added liberally) to your choice of dish.
The portions are huge. Like, bigger-than-your- face huge. So bring your appetite and stretchy pants.
